Groundwork is an environmental regeneration organisation that builds sustainable communities in areas of need. Groundwork works in partnership with local organisations to engage people in regeneration projects that will improve quality of life, focusing particularly on those areas with the greatest deprivation. For the Green Volunteering Project we worked with asylum seekers by providing information and opportunities around volunteering on environmental projects. The project was based on environmental learning, engaging with the natural environment and was linked in with community and social cohesion and provided a platform to learn about citizenship. As part of a wider project including the delivery of volunteer opportunities in a green environment a research consultation was carried out by Groundwork Birmingham and Solihull to discuss ways Refugee Community Organisation’s (RCO) can strengthen their capacity to support asylum seekers through volunteering programmes and discuss problems they face. The over-arching aim of the project includes a toolkit booklet accompanied with a CD of policies, procedures and volunteering templates. Throughout this research consultation, members were actively involved in participating in the workshop, developing additional skills and gaining knowledge.
