Employment Advice Centres in BirminghamAsylum seekers cannot work while their claim is being processed. However, there are a few “purposeful activities” programmes in some parts of the UK. These provide opportunities for asylum seekers to get involved in volunteering for community activities or learning English and IT skills. More information on purposeful activities schemes can be found on the Home Office website www.homeoffice.gov.uk The Refugee Council and British Medical Association have set up a database of asylum seekers and refugees who are qualified doctors. They offer advice on how such doctors can continue their careers in the UK. But even asylum seeking doctors still cannot work until their claim has been upheld and they are granted refugee status. Refugees are entitled to the same social and economic rights as UK citizens. They have full access to employment. Employment Resources |
