Education

From next year, adult asylum seekers may not automatically qualify for ESOL (English for Speakers of other Languages). Only the unemployed and people receiving income-based benefits will have their fees waived if they want to learn English in free ESOL classes.

Adult asylum seekers who are awaiting the outcome of applications to stay in Britain will not qualify for free ESOL, or indeed subsidised further education of any kind. Only those who are granted refugee status, humanitarian protection or discretionary leave by the government will be eligible according to the LSC (Learning Skills Council).

Asylum seekers aged under 18 will still be able to get free ESOL and further education. Asylum seekers waiting for longer than six months for a decision or appeal on their claim will be entitled to free English classes from September according to the government.

Refugees are entitled to the same social and economic rights as UK citizens. They have full access to education.
