South Birmingham College - Large ESOL Image

In 2006 the Skills for Life department at South Birmingham College, through our marketing company Rave, produced a leaflet publicizing ESOL provision in Birmingham for asylum seekers.  This was in response to consulation with RCOs which revealed that there was confusion amongst asylum seekers as to the nature and extent of ESOL classes.

The leaflet has information available in a number of different languages including French, Arabic, Somali, English and Urdu.  It gives details of the courses which are on offer, the content of the courses, possible venues for studying and extra support which is available while studying.

After the leaflet had been designed and printed, an action plan was drawn up to use it to publicize provision and train frontline staff in its use.  To this end a number of training events were conducted with staff from organisations involved with asylum seekers to enable them to give information about ESOL provision.

This was welcomed enthusiastically by the staff who said they felt much more confident in advising clients afterwards.  We also held a number of events for asylum seekers where we distributed the leaflets and spoke with them about their needs and expectations.  These were fairly well attended and participants felt that they helped them to feel more confident about enrolling on ESOL courses.

Numbers of leaflets have been left with organisations and we still have some left here should anyone want them.  The leaflet is also available in PDF format for inclusion on websites etc.
