This project was developed and delivered in partnership by Bournville College and the Community Integration Partnership (CIP), between January and March 2006. The aim of the project was to make contact with a range of agencies, organisations and individuals in order to establish new links, and further develop existing ones, to ensure an effective cohesive network of statutory and community / voluntary providers. The links included hostels where emergency accommodation is provided for asylum seekers. Find out more about the Asylum Seeker Engagement and Support project South Birmingham College ESOL Leaflet
In 2006 the Skills for Life department at South Birmingham College, through its marketing company Rave, produced a leaflet publicizing ESOL provision in Birmingham for asylum seekers. This was in response to consulation with RCOs which revealed that there was confusion amongst asylum seekers as to the nature and extent of ESOL classes. The leaflet has information available in a number of different languages including French, Arabic, Somali, English and Urdu. It gives details of the courses which are on offer, the content of the courses, possible venues for studying and extra support which is available while studying. ESOL through Art was designed to deliver fast-track ESOL training through a programme of creative crafts as its subject matter. The sessions were dual tutored with an ESOL specialist assisting, supporting and taking notes from which to generate further language work. There were also sessions solely with the ESOL specialist where poetry, drama and graphic novels were utilised. Trips to art exhibitions also provided a basis for language work.
